As 2024 comes to a close, I find myself looking back at what this year taught me—not just as a marketer but as a business owner navigating the ups and downs of an ever-changing digital landscape. It’s been a year of wins, learning curves, and moments that forced me to rethink what works and what doesn’t.
Here are some of my most valuable takeaways that I hope will resonate with you and your own journey:
1. Trends Are Fun, But Are They Impactful? We all know that rush of seeing a new trend take over TikTok or Instagram and thinking, I should jump on that. I’ve had clients invest hours researching and curating content based on these trends, hoping to ride the wave to more visibility. But here’s the thing I always ask them: Is this bringing you new enquires and business, or is it just adding noise?
Trends can be engaging, sure, but if they aren’t moving the needle for your bottom line, they might be a distraction rather than a driver.
2. The “Perfect” Instagram Feed is Outdated.
I used to love the idea of a curated, picture-perfect Instagram feed. It felt professional, tidy, and on-brand. But this year, I had to let go of that perfection. Why? Because when building a personal brand, people don’t connect with perfect; they connect with real. I can’t count the number of times a candid post or an authentic story outperformed my most meticulously planned content. Your audience is craving authenticity, not perfection.
3. Show Up and Show Your Expertise.
Video content—it’s the one thing I’ve been shouting from the rooftops for the past eight years, and it’s not going anywhere. This year, it became even more clear: If you’re not using video, you’re falling behind. Whether it’s short-form Reels or longer educational videos, showing your face and sharing your knowledge builds trust and familiarity. The times I showed up on camera to share insights or even a day-in-the-life, I noticed a significant uptick in engagement and new inquiries. Video isn’t just content; it’s a powerful connection tool.
4. A Strategy Isn’t Optional.
I work with clients who are incredibly passionate about what they do. They pour their hearts into their businesses but often hit a wall when it comes to marketing. Why? Because they don’t have a plan. This year reaffirmed that a solid, flexible marketing strategy is non-negotiable. It’s the difference between posting sporadically and hoping for results versus posting strategically and knowing your content will drive engagement and leads. A strategy helps keep your efforts aligned with your goals, so you’re not just winging it but working towards sustainable growth.
5. Adaptability Over Rigid Plans.
One thing 2024 taught me was that adaptability trumps rigid planning every time. I’ve always believed in four-week content cycles, and this year solidified why. Sticking to long-term, unchangeable strategies just doesn’t work in today’s world. You need to be willing to shift, test, and tweak. Sometimes a post flops; sometimes life gets in the way. The key is being okay with that and adjusting as you go.
